Football follow

It's very hard for me to judge what happened in Hawaii to the football team. The only thing that is apparent is that they lost and by a lot, 50-13.

I took the over at 76, and lost. I hit the Hawaii score, as I predicted the Warriors score 54 and put up 50. I also said Brennan would throw 450-500 yards and was pretty close (he threw for 425). I also said he would have five, maybe six touchdowns. Bingo!

For NMSU, I shot an airball. I said the Aggies would move the ball and put up 35 points. They actually did move it (442 yards of total offense) but were kept off the board. Again, I wasn't there, making it hard to judge or evaluate. Obviously they had some turnovers and also went for it on fourth down four times, converting it just once. I was listening to the game on the radio and there was a fourth-and-1 on the Hawaii 33. NMSU was down 6-0 and went for it. I liked the call of going for it. The kicking game has not been good this year and punting it against Hawaii makes no sense. That's like giving another team the ball at their own 40. But the Aggies threw the ball. Why? Run it and get the yard or just do a sneak. The ball was incomplete and the Warriors got it back.

I understand the team's identity is to throw the ball, but on fourth-and-1, statement play, just cram it in there. I know you can always look back and criticize when something doesn't go right but either way, I run it there. But NMSU just won't do it because it's not their style. Oh well. Cut your losses and move on I guess.

Another early sequence that I thought hurt was actually right after the first play from scrimmage - a Davon House interception. NMSU went three-and-out and gave the ball right back. A good team capitalizes and makes something out of that, they don't just punt it right back. Gotta capitalize on opportunities if you want to be good, not punt it back and not missing out on fourth-and-1.

Anyway, I shot an airball with the NMSU score and stats. Chase seemed to play alright but according to Mumme, was hounded by pressure all night. He left the game late and is questionable for this week after getting hit in the head by a pass rusher. They need him badly.

Kenneth Buckley did nothing, A.J. Harris continued to fall short of expectations. Derek Dubois was the one receiver who showed up for big yardage, but only one TD for the Aggie offense is unheard of. Not much for Cleaver either.

The bottom line is that the team was not supposed to win in Hawaii anyway. Seeing a more competitive showing, at least on the scoreboard, certainly would have nice. But NMSU is just not on that level. It was proven loud and clear in Boise and once again in Hawaii, although not as loud.

Even a Pop Warner coach wouldn't throw a pass on 4th and short in an opponents territory. The wisdom and coaching ability of coach Mumme is called to question. Certainly, his days are numbered at NMSU. NMSU,football fans, and the city of Las Cruces deserves better--a head coach who values winning over piling up statistics. Mumme must go!

I was very optomistic about this Aggie football season and would like to officially jump back off the Aggie bandwagon. I thought the Aggies were going to be much improved this year, but seem to be playing back at the level they finished year one under Mumme. I don't understand it.

I know the loss of Williams has hurt the Aggies tremendously, but the rest of the team seems to be out of gas with 4 tough games to go. I would be very surprised if the Aggies win another game. The Aggies need to recruit bigger, stronger athletes. Period. Williams is great, but we can't rely on a guy his size to be our #1 Option, and expect him to play the entire season. He needs help. Plain and simle.

Mumme is doing the best with what he has. The kicking game has been terrible as of late, and with the Aggies undersized at every position (except QB) I think this is the best Mumme can do with the players he has. You can blame Mumme for that, but until true D1 players want to come to NMSU the Aggies will be this good. I don't see them being any better next year, because their size will continue to be a problem. We have to play a perfect game to have a chance to win, but eventually the other team's D line wears our O line out, and teams start pusshing us around. Some teams do it earlier than others.

NMSU in a Bowl game this year? Not even close! Who the heck made that prediction? NMSU needs to drop down to 1AA to be competitive, or get rid of Mumme. I would rather see a decent 1AA game instead of these blowouts!

Hey Mumme quit blaming the kids and you take some of the blame for the crappy performance last Saturday! (Las Cruses Times on Monday) Just admit that you did not get the kids ready and you flat got out coached again! Your days are numbered, and I can hardly wait for a winning or at least 500 season. Both of which are impossible with your inept coaching skills!!

Aggies oh Aggies! Please don't embarass our school on national tv again!!

It was tough to watch the Aggies on Saturday.
They can't play w/ the WAC's big boys, can't beat the middle of the pack teams and, have a tough time beating the bottom feeders.

Looks like we are going to get embarrased AGAIN on national TV this Friday by a middle of the pack team!

Two more week for BB season!

Typical Aggie fans. Already giving up on our team, because we lost to Hawaii. We had no chance to beat Hawaii in the first place. Hawaii plays at a different level at home. Hal Mumme is doing a great job, and is going to get the job done. We are 4-5, and have a great chance to win 6 or 7 wins this year. Even if we win 6 games that would be a sucessful season. Hal Mumme is a good coach, and has won at every school he has coached. He is going to win at NMSU. Our program sucked before he came to NMSU. UNM, and UTEP kicked our ass the year before Hal Mumme came to NMSU. We played UNM tough the past two years, and had a chance to beat them, and we played UTEP tough last season, and actually beat a really good UTEP team this season. UTEP is 4-4, but could easily be 6-2, and 4-0 in conference play, but lost two games by 3 points each. NMSU has a good team, but injuries are killing us. Last season we were able to play with every team in the WAC, because we didn't have any injuries like we have this year. Everyone on offense was healthy except for Chase going out a few games, but he started every single game last season. Why do you think Fresno State went 4-8 last season? Because they had a lot of injuries just like NMSU has this year. Injuries hurt. Did you see Fresno State fans asking to fire Pat Hill. NMSU has some of the best coaches in the WAC, and they will get the job done. We are starting to recruit really good, and already have two commitments from 2 three-star including one of the best WR in the state of Texas. I saw film on him, and the kid has some talent. We have Julius Fleming a little WR like Chris Williams with his speed who is red-shirting this year, and Gerald Gurrier who palyed DB the past two years. I also think he is red-shirting to, because he was moved to WR. He also has the 4.4 speed. We have a lot of talent red-shirting this year. Kawika Shook a So DE who played last year, Jeff Lucas 4.6 speed who is red-shirting and will start in place of Floyd next year, and we also have another LB who has 4.5 speed who put up huge tackle, and sack numbers in hs, and at prep school. We have that little DL Ana from Hawaii. We are recruiting his younger brother who is a three-star and one of the top OL in the nation. We have a shot at getting him. We also already have five commitments, and by this time last year we had only 1. UNM only has 1 commitment so far. People who think Hal Mumme should be fired must be very very very stupid. He is going to get the job done.

I hear your frustration, but lets not start comparing Fresno St. and Pat Hill to NMSU and Mumme. It doesn't really line up.

Anonymous said...

"Me thinks he doth protest to much"! You are a Mumme lover or a coach. We are just tired of all the excuses. I say drop to 1AA and be competitive with or without Hal.

Anonymous said...

I disagree with the people saying we should drop to a 1AA. SO many schools fight to make the jump up to D1, why would we want to go to 1AA.

On another note, what is with the "white out" against Nevada? Why dont we have a "crimson night." Every home game should be a Crimson night. More importantly, why do we always have white out's against Nevada(last year's hoops game)? Whose main colors are white and blue.

I dont know about you, but I'd rather see the stadium in Crimson on game days.

LOL Anon 5:02. You're silly diatribe is ... well just silly.

Also I've never once see Hal throw any kids under the bus. He takes the blame for the most part. No one, I repeat: No one is blaming the kids.

Teddy no one is comparing programs in regards to Fresno St. and NMSU. Just the injury situation. I know injuries are part of the game. But to say they don't have a negative impact with a team with little, to no depth, is blind IMHO.

Teddy said...

Absolutely anonymous. The injury situation has decimated this team. Your best wideout and starting QB are hurt. Linebackers are down. No one recovers from that.

At the same time, you said no one in Fresno was calling for Hill's head. There's also a reason for that. The program has been successful for years under his watch and everyone knows what they're getting from him. A down year or two can be swept under the rug much quicker there than here.

I too think Mumme should be allowed to see this through. Again, the team has been greatly hurt by injuries and I do think they have continued to play hard. They have also matched last year's win total and should surpass it. But with the general frustration from the fan base and the general lack of winning over the years, to think that people aren't going to be upset by that and will just go along with the program, that's just naive. Hal Mumme is a D-1 football coach, and the pressure to win will always be there. In the end, it's about production. That's all people will care about when his contract is up.

Don't lay an egg on Friday or all the rumblings will get louder. I think we here in Las Cruces want to go to games that we have a chance of winning against D1 competition. It does feel good to beat UTEP, but every year I have a hard time defending the Aggies against Homers that would rather see Mayfield play. I have never been successful "selling" natives on how good the Aggies are. I was thinking NM Bowl this year even though we started the season with a couple of shaky offensive performances. I was thinking NM Bowl until Boise State handed us our hat. Everyone has injuries. Just stop making excuses and start competing.

Anonymous said...

We also have got to improve the kicking game. What is Roy Gerela doing with these kids? He has been here three seasons and we still can not get a decent kickoff!!

Anonymous said...

How can an 8-27 record justify Mumme's existence at NMSU?

He goes into his last year of his contract w/ his tail between his legs.

Point blank?
A winning season next year/ bowl game saves his job.
If not, the coaching search starts around Thanksgiving 0f 08.

Sincerely,
The Truth

Hal Mumme is doing a great job. He is bring in a lot of talent, and now that we have 25 scholies to give this season. NMSU already has 5 commitments, plus we already have a few grey shirts that we signed last year, because we were limited at schlies. Hal Mumme will get the job done. He is a good coach, and has proved that already. He has won at every single school he has coached at, and I think rebuilding NMSU is a lot tougher, because of us being in the sunbelt. There is a big difference between sunbelt talent, and wac talent.

To The (bogus) Truth:

Year One: 0-12

That's a fluke. We had a QB who were not Air Raid quality. I throw that out the window. Mumme's official tenure started in year two.

I'm glad Dr. Boston isn't as short sighted as some of you "fans". I bet you are the same type that complains but ends up leaving games, regardless of the score, at halftime.

Well, it was encouraging to see that Paul Young was 100% in attempts against Hawaii. I think we'll be ok for the future with him kicking field goals, but Ryan Jastram has been horrible with the kick-offs.

Anonymous said...

I agree that the kickoffs have been terrible, but I blame Gerela. He is responsible for the kickers performance. Why do they not make a change? I realy think the first change they should make is firing him!

Anonymous said...

No, Mumme is in the 3rd yr of a 4 yr contract, not 2nd!

Say what you want or call me names. 8-27 is the record.

He needs to pull a rabbit out of a hat in order to save his job next year.
I will re-new my season tickets and hope he gets it done but, he's got an uphill battle.

The Aggies are 4-0 this year at home. What would be embarassing is a small crowd on National TV. If you have any pride in Las Cruces you will show up and support the team. This is as much about Las Cruces as it is the football team.

Anonymous said...

Typical Las Cruces fans here. They want the world, but won't show up to support what is really going on with NMSU football. When was the last time you saw this many improvements to the football stadium? The level of athletes is getting better here, and if you can't see that, well....sorry.

What I see is a team that plays hard ALL THE TIME. They were overmatched at Hawaii due, mostly, to injuries.

And, calling for a move to 1AA is just silly. Get a grip.

Teddy said...

A small crowd would be horrible. National TV, people need to see a good atmosphere in LC. It will be embarrassing if nobody's there.

Anonymous said...

I fully expect an embarassing crowd at the game. They don't ever show up for the national TV games. They weren't even there for the Boise State game last year! People complain about us being a horrible team, but the truth is, we have a better record than we have had in a few years, yet no one is showing up, especially the students! Watching the game against Idaho on FSN Arizona was just plain embarassing with the low crowd turnout.

Anonymous said...

If I was a player at NMSU or looking to play at NMSU I think i would have to reconsider based on horrible fan support. Don't give me the record or any other reason. This team is fun to watch Friday night is a big game for them this season and it sucks that you won't see over 14K there. Give me a break when you talk about Mumme or Basketball, This team could go 8-4 every year and you would still find a reason to keep your butts away on game days. Get off your backsides and show these players and coaches that you will support the team.

Teddy said...

I disagree, if the team was 8-4, everyone would love them and the support would be there.

Anonymous said...

Unfortunately a lot of us season ticket holders and casual fans alike have high school kids playing on friday night that would normally be at a Saturday Aggie game.
That in itself will hurt attendance. ESPN games are great, but some people just can't make a friday nighter...

All of this talk about keeping Mumme is ridiculous. He lacks the ability to lead these young men. We have a pathetic football team that is absolutely undisciplined and unmotivated. If Mumme is not to blame for that, then who is?
