Edgar Garibay

Just got off the phone with California big man Edgar Garibay, meaning he finally answered his phone. He said he will be on campus November 3 for an official visit, just in time for the Aggies' first exhibition game against Cal State L.A. on the same day.

Garibay is a 6-10, 240-pound senior at Compton High School, who has already been offered by the Aggies.
It will be his first official visit after unofficial visits to Louisville and UNLV in the last couple of months. He said he also plans to make official visits to San Francisco, UNLV, Memphis and either Boston College or Georgetown.

Marvin Menzies already has a verbal committment from another California big man, center Chris Gabriel.

Hopefully we can land Garibay. Looking at his evaluation in scout.com, he seems pretty good. Not as good as some of the big men we got for the '07 class, but still good.

Wow, that sounds great, good insider info. Hopefully Menzies can carry some recruiting clout. It seems that he's doing some work out in California, and Theus was doing pretty well out there. Does it appear that Menzies actually has connections or is riding on the coattails of Theus?

Buss,
I wouldn't say he is riding on Reggie's coattails. You have to remember, he has been recruiting for a while, and his West Coast history and connections were established before he even came to NMSU. I think the fact that he had a highly rated guy like Gillenwater come to Las Cruces, knowing he wouldn't even play this year, speaks to what players think of him and what kind of recruiter he is.

He's UNLV bound. Playing with 7' Beas Hamgay is too good to pass up.

I would say there are some character issues with Garibay, that would be the only reason UNLV and Kruger wouldn't bring him there. They just dismissed a 6'10" kid for the same reason. There are articles in the LA papers about Garibay getting into trouble, although they never disclose what.

Please elaborate. I'm a Compton high alum, and I have quite a few friends who have known Edgar from his days BEFORE he even started playing basketball in the 8th and 9th grades, including one of my closest friends who was one of Edgar's middle school teachers. Yet, with all of these connections, I have NEVER heard anything negative about his character. The biggest criticsim I've heard and witnessed is that he can be a little too passive and laid back on the court. But other than that, not a peep. I'm not saying that there haven't been any negative stories about him or his character, but I personally haven't seen any.

Is Garibay of Mexican or Filipino descent?
