Receiver to DB?

You would figure that this is an option for the team. They have so many wideouts it's not even funny.

Chris Buckner is a decent example but he wasn't in their top flight of receivers anyway. There are other guys who would make great safeties or cornerbacks just based off pure athleticism.

I think that Mumme believes he really needs all these weapons on offense to have a legitimate shot at winning. They are just so deep here it's silly. The secondary had problems last season and didn't really add anyone of significance. You would have to figure that they would have the same problems yet again unless the new coaching staff is simply filled with miracle workers.

We'll see how Buckner does in his transition to the secondary. Apparently, they are trying him at safety. It's not an issue of athleticism for Buckner. He has the talent to cover people. But will he tackle? That's always the question for receivers making the move. Good defenders seek contact and love hitting. If Buckner has that passion, he could make a legitimate DB for the Aggies.

Typical Mumme. All he knows is QBs and receivers.
He knows absolutely zero about the rest of the game. Special teams, DBs, linemen, defense etc. he is clueless.
Just look at the previous years he has been here. Get a clue NMSU!!

So what?? That's what he has assistants for!

Gotta give Buckner his props.
The kid just wants to play and help the team in any way possible.

I really he can make the transition and lay the wood on some people!!

(Question) say you have a good quality receiver and a average defensive back, which player should NMSU take?

I feel that NMSU should take the better athlete regardless of position. Then find a roll for them to be successful.

Chris Buckner is not average DB. He has the talent to make a good DB. He has the size, and the speed to do it. Hal Mumme has done a great job recruiting players to NMSU. NMSU have so much talent that every year we always have 2 or 3 players move to the other side of the ball. Here is a list of recent players.

Tony Glynn moved from DB to RB. Chris Nwoko moved from RB to LB. LaAuli Fonoti moved from TE to LB. Polo, and Bolin both from from the DL to the OL. Baiamonte moved from WR to DB. Nick Cleaver is gone now, but he went from being a DB to a TE. Moss moved from FB to NT. I can keep going and going.

I predict Buckner will be the Aggies' starting safety. As a receiver, he was, of course, FAST and full of confidence. Now that his confidence isn't at its highest, I'm sure he'll make the most of his opportunity to make plays at safety. He's strong, fast and has good hands ... You really do have to give him props. He's a standup student-athlete and I'm confident he will be battling Biamonte for the starting safety spot. It's hard not to root for somebody like Buckner.

I love anonymous bloggers....

Anon 2:06, explain to us why all that change is a good thing?

Change is a part of life of the athletic world. The way a team handles change is the deference between a good teams and bad teams.

Does anyone know what happened to Jeff Lucas, linebacker from Ohio who redshirted last year? I noticed that he isn't listed on the roster. Did he leave NMSU?

Lucas left the team. He was one of Woody's guy, and I'm guessing wasn't a fan of JDL. It's a shame was looking forward to seeing him play. Heard a lot of positive about him.

Reply to Anon 10:16. Yeah, like the kicking coach Roy Gerela over the previuos 3 years? You are right, Mumme is a absolute genius at deligating coaching responsibilities. By the way who is the special teams coach? Probably one of the freshman kickers will do that right? Get a clue NMSU!!

Did Lucas transfer to play somewhere else? I saw him play in high school and he's a solid football player.
