Wendell McKines

When I heard about Wendell McKines leaving NMSU, I was somewhat surprised.

Let's face it, the team seemed somewhat dysfunctional as times last year. Wendell was someone who could be relied on for consistent play and was a bright spot. A freshman, a Menzies guy, who patrolled the court and did the dirty work while providing some ruggedness to the lineup.

Luster, Jones, we expected that. Wendell, not so much. At the end of the year, I said that I wouldn't be surprised if a handful of players left. Wendell was on the lower half of the list. Again, a bright spot last season. Someone that could grow in the Menzies era. Those were things he signified from the 2008 season. Unfortunately, that will be the only season.

I've heard different things.
1). A loved one is pretty ill and wants spend time w/ her.
2). He's not happy playing for Menzies.

If it's reason #1.
Family comes first and he's doing the right thing!

If it's #2.
Las Cruces we have a problem! This was Menzies lone recruit and he doesn't want to play for him?!

I realy hope it's reason #1.
Whatever the case, were losing a heck of a player and a quality young man!

I wish you the best of luck young man.

He was my favorite player on the team this past season, very athletic, good court awareness, and now he's gone. If anybody else leaves, we've really got to start thinking about what is going on there. Who's next, Herb Pope?

Thanks for the APR hit Theus.

Yes, we are left with a couple players who have zero character, but you all think they're something special. There is more to building a program than winning games. The kids we have in the program are not leaders and are taking this team to a very scary place. Thank Theus for that.
Menzies is a quality person and he does things the right way. Too bad he has to clean up the mess left by Theus.
Pope? JY? You all really think these guys are the answer? How about we bring in some character guys in our recruiting!

They are leaving because of the coaching or lack thereof. Before the end of the season I heard there were approx. 7 players wanting to leave. I think a few are scared to ask for a release.

why would they be scared to ask for there release?? I just want players that want to be here #1

You're not good at math are you.

We had 5 seniors leave, if 7 wanted releases that would leave uh... one walk on on the roster.

We know you're full of it because at least 2 players have used their transfer.

Go sit in the corner, and think about your epic fail at spreading rumors.

So here are some news that just might rock things here. Now I just heard about all of this today but it comes from one of the players whom I have for class and he told me about this.

1. Menzies had asked Wen to sit out next year in order to use another scholarship on another player and so that players whom he felt were in danger of transferring would be happy about PT. This is the one that to me holds the least water but is what he said

2. Gibson is trying to transfer out of here. I felt this as a shocker since he is a sure starter and contributor to this team. He had a good season and seemed to be on the up.

3. Pope and JY are on the road to being released. Aside from Pope wanting to be with his baby he did not like the way he was being used or the way Menzies coached. JY felt the same way and according to this player they are both very close to being released.

Like I said, this comes from someone within the team and should be pretty reliable information. I hope some things are wrong though as this would really change the team. How much of this do you think will happen Teddy?

teddy, i asked this same question to groves. why don't you all do an article and see how our coaches stack up in base salary to the WAC coaches? that would be an interesting article to view. boston talks about wanting to be the top mid major program in the country, so lets see where we are. we need to act like it to be it and stop pretending.
whats up with our women's hoop coach at nmsu? is he staying? i hope boston pays him and keeps him here.

anon 10:22 --

So you are saying that a roster of 12 players (17 minus the five seniors)over half of them wanted to leave? I find it hard to believe. If you are including the on campus recruits/redshirts. It's bit more believable, but not by much.

You guys go to hell. 7 players were talking about leaving. Three have received releases already. Yes, there were 4 others talking about it but if they actually go through with it is a different story. Sometimes they say things when they are mad. Luster, Jones, McKines, Gibson, Pope, Young & Cole. So you sit in a damn corner, I heard this with my own ears from their mouths. Coach you want players that want to be here & they want coaches who want them.

Players are sometimes scared to ask for a release because it is a bit intimidating. This came from a player that told me they were getting a release. Every day I would ask have you got it yet and they would say no. It is a different situation for them.
