Spence signs on

New Mexico State locked up Darin Spence for another three years and possibly a fourth to coach the women's basketball team.

Spence needed this deal. NMSU improved greatly last year and should be solid again. Spence was not a McKinley Boston hire originally but has payed dividends none-the-less. The women had a great 1-2 punch up front last year in Anikia Jawara and Sherrel Neal. Both of them will be gone but Maddi Spence is back at point guard and other players will fill in around her.

NMSU had to show Spence some sort of loyalty. He has seen the program improve in his time and produced in a season when there was pressure from up top to get some wins. Not bringing him back would have reflected poorly. Frankly, they had not choice. Gotta take care of your people if they're winning you games.

Congratulations to coach Spence. Gotta give the guy credit, his back was against the wall and got his team to respond!

It's taken him a while but, he's got the program, on the right track.
Big Up's coach!!

Great of NMSU to upgrade Coach Spence contract. He has done a remarkable job with the women's program. Coach Spence is getting good recruits to NMSU and will only get better.

Great to see Coach staying around. He came on when the program was a joke and has slowly turned it in to an exciting situation for all of us around here. How about next year we all promote the women's hoop program and pack the Pan Am! Now, why did it take Boston so long to do it and from what I saw, he really didn't take care of the guy all that much. That just shows how little he cares about the positive women's athletic programs on campus. 10% raise for three WAC title games, fifth best turn around in D1 ball, all league players, 23-9 record and so on? Thats a joke, right? Also, the article stated they agreed on something, but it didn't say coach signed it. Mumme loses and he got an extension and more money. Boston did the same thing to coach Jordan this year. My advice to Jordan and Spence; go to UNM cuz they'll take care of you. Go Aggies!

My guess is Jordan's and Spence's "reward" for success is minimual due to revenue generation from their respective sports. LC is simply not big enough or willing to financially support womens' hoops and volleyball, which is unfortunate. Frankly, its too bad, but a reality of what Dr. Boston deals with. The decline in revenue from the men's hoops and football programs coupled with the salaries we pay those HCs, there simply was not enough money to pay Spence and Jordan what they deserve. Now if we had more financial supporters and less Aggie "cheerleaders" like the few emotional die hards that praise MM for a great job his first year, deserving people like Jordan and Spence would be treated better. It's all about economics, and mens football and basketball are NMSU's engine. When reveneues from those programs decline, like they did this past year, more financial supporters and less blow-hard cheerleaders would help substantially. Go Aggies!

Yeah, we need less blow-hard cheerleaders, and more blow-hard critics.

I never understand the fans in this town. They complain that Boston doesn't take care of coach Jordan and Spence saying they need to pay them more. Well you can't pay them more if there is no revenue because people don't show up to football and basketball games. People don't show up to games in this town and then they bitch when NMSU doesn't have enough money to pay the successful coaches top dollar.
