Player grades

For those who have not heard at this point in time, it appears as if grade eligibility is an issue on the NMSU basketball team.

Nothing has been officially confirmed at this point, but I have heard that Justin Hawkings, Passos and Paris Carter have all failed to meet grade requirements this past semester and face the possibility of not playing.

From my understanding, the three did not make the trip to Louisville but are back in Las Cruces trying to work things out. Work things out? It sounds like a mess. Again, nothing has been confirmed. But I believe it is true.

So far: A team that can't win road games,17,000+ vs. 6,000 HOME attendance,a head coach that has the excitement of paint drying, and now it's about grades (again)7-3 vs 5-8 now- oh,well-"Reggie Nation" was fun while it lasted-and at least ONE tournament title.

And we lost our home-court edge. I find it very suspicious that grades were FINAL Thursday AM, yet "nothing is official yet" and the three players are in LC "clearing up some things"?? Huh?? Absolutely agree with Az Aggie, and I'm sure glad I made to trek to LC last year for the WAC tourney. The way things look now, I might as well save my vacation days for family time. I certainly don't want to make a trip to LC to watch NMSU get eliminated in the first or second round. If Hawkins and Passos are indeed ruled academically ineligible, I'll be off to football season already, and our savior Joe Lee Dunn!!

Great to hear from "The Fair Weather Boys" (above) once again! Great Aggie fans they are not!

I think NMSU should take a page out of URI's book. They hired a new coach spent 3 years working out styles and working in recruits. Now they have a squad that competes with the big conferences even being from a mid major in the A-10.

Ted-gimme a call I'll be passing through LC 4 new years.

A crap!
There goes the season.

Wasn't Reggie all over his team about academics?
He pulled scholarships from a couple of players (Mikey Mitchell) when they had problems in class.

Marvin Menso can't coach and doesn't seem to care about the academic standing of his players. This guy is embarrasing NMSU on and off the court!

Bring back Lou Henson!
I got the munchies..... hot pockets!

Dear Anon: As for me (and maybe Aggie Glare)I'm an alum that has to dole out more & more each year for ,at best, a mediocre FB program, and for another "re-rebuilding" year for basketball.I remember the days when blind loyalty was cheap-but there sure was a LOT MORE than 6,000 for a home rivalry games when I was a student long long time ago-NMSU students get FREE admission and they STILL don't turn out? It sound like you have too many fair weather students faculty and local support.

This is just crap. What the hey, man. The season is already limping along and now this. I don't even have the energy to point the finger. Boston? Menzies? Players? Who cares anymore. I talked to Diehard Aggie Fan today and he had forgotten the Aggies even played last night. I was shocked. Now this. I know the Remaining Aggie Fans are done. The student body is weak, nobody cares about NMSU Athletics anymore, so save your time and energy.

It's easy to point at all the people who have blindly supported Menzies from the start and say 'told you so,' but that doesn't solve much. If anyone wants to sit here and argue that Menzies has done a good job, then I'm all for it, that's an easy argument to win.

Think about Reggie, and what he did, not just as coach, but as PR man for the team and the university. He stirred up the rivalry with UTEP, he challenged his team and the fans, and Menzies sits back, says he didn't know that the UTEP game was a big rivalry, and continues to let his players fall apart. I never supported his hiring, I think there were better candidates waiting if Boston had been a little more meticulous, but he hired an untested assistant, and look what we've got, a boring team that can't win a game despite having enough talent to win a lot of games. All you Menzies lovers need to get a clue.

Please. The only people to blame in this situation are the kids who didn't get it done in the classroom. Anybody putting this on Menzies plate has a box of rocks in their skulls. Passos and Hawkins are SENIORS. They should know better. Menzies has been here about 6 months, and he's to blame? Give me a break.

I'm not going to suggest Menzies is doing a stellar job, but I'm not going to say he is failing at it either. He's been dealt crummy hand after crummy hand. Then to top it off he has to put up with the naysayers ready to throw him to the curb. All this after just half a season. A half season where we've seen good and bad things. You negative nancies just irk me.

Menzies is a lost cause, maybe we can look over his resume and find out he does not have a degree and we can get out the contract with him. I said all along we should have hired the asst from Unv of Texas. This is so sad so much talent and no results its all on the coach.

Man, you all are all sounding like CERTAIN UTEP bloggers, i.e. Go hog wild for your team when they are up and then totally slam them when they are down. No one is happy with the basketball season so far. But instead of being crybabies about it and even bringing the team further down, why not lay off the negative stuff that we already know is there. Some of us get tired of hearing it.

The students are not the reason for the low attendance. The student section for both UNM and UTEP games were packed but every other section was half full.

I'm not a big Menzies fan and I think he came thinking, everything should be OK with this NCAA caliber team.
He should have been tougher and maybe, a bit more of a micro-manager his first year and then loosen up.
That said, the greades are not really his fault.

Two of thise guys are seniors and should know better.

It's the same thing we went through in football season. Being critical of your team doesn't make you a fair weather or bad fan. Seriously, name ONE thing that Menzies has done that's positive... I'm waiting?

That's exactly my point, we needed a change of direction after Lou Henson, and I'm not speaking ill of him, the man is like a god around here, but at the end of his run, he just didn't have the energy to bring a lot of passion to NMSU. Reggie brought that, then he left, and Menzies came in. He has a losing record, he inherited (whether you like it or not) some players with unresolved issues with the NCAA, and the kicker is, he went 1-3 in our big rivalry games. Now, if we stink it up in WAC play, are you still going to sit back and give him the benefit of the doubt?

Of course not everything is his fault, but this is NCAA basketball, winning is the only thing that matters. 5-8 isn't good, and if you think it is, and you keep digging for positives, you're the one who needs to get a clue. You're probably the same people who still think Hal Mumme is doing a bang up job.

Can you investigate the rumor going around that athletes taking courses that are Web-based (so that professors can never see who is doing the work) are suddenly getting much better grades than they were before?

Didn't know about the intensity of the UTEP and University of Nothing Much rivalries? Everything he says is prefaced by some type of "I don't know/didn't know" "Menso" seems to be an accurate description.Another one of those people who live among a different culture, but live in their little world instead of trying to learn about the community around them.AND,YES-you too,Mr Coach Mumme.

Let's hope it's just that-a rumor.Just ask any Aggie fan who was around for the "McCarthygate" years-and it all started with that gosh darn article in that student newspaper.....

at least mcCarthy won games. At least Henson fielded students. At least menzies... um yeah sweet.

ok.. so um getting a 1.9 at NMSU really? Maybe we should try to get our basketball team into the PGM to help 'em out.

So late that no one will probably read this. But wanted to give some "real facts." Remember grades roll from semester to semester. Theus told the guys last spring leading up to the WAC to focus more on bb than classroom. He told them they could make it up in the fall. Thus...Menzie inherited an issue that started with King Theus. Not necessarily a Menzie fan, but he does deserve credit for retaining all the top recruits that Theus PROMISED he would coach. And now he has a few "last issues" left behind by Theus. Just surprised that they weren't watching this closer all fall semester. I've known what Theus told his players since last year's WAC tournament.
