Mike Dunbar

Well, as I'm sure just about all of you know, the Aggies offered the offensive coordinator position to Mike Dunbar.

Dunbar is a veteran coach, someone who has cultivated high-octane offenses during his college career. If he accepts — which I believe he will — it looks like a good hire for NMSU.

Coach DeWayne Walker wanted a coordinator with experience, someone who could watch over that side of the ball and take care of the unit's responsibilities. Dunbar fits the bill.

NMSU still needs added weapons on offense, especially to execute the spread attack. The quarterback position will be an open competition this spring and fall. Where will running back Seth Smith fit in with the new offensive gameplan? I'm sure they are still looking to add a piece or two in the offensive backfield. We haven't seen any verbal commitments from the wide receiver position which will be important as well. The team has bulked up along the offensive line, which was one of its top offseason priorities.

The Aggies have been proactive and aggressive under Walker. They went into the offseason with a plan and executed. No dilly dallying or wasted time, from a recruiting standpoint or from the offensive coordinator position. It's good to see. Coach Walker wants to win at NMSU. Whether or not they do, it won't be for a lack of trying, I can assure you. The work ethic is there. Now they just need to squeeze a six or seven win season out of the group.

What's your feeling on the Dunbar hire? Let me know.....

They need a high quality wr coach and someone who will get the wrs to play up! Dunbar is a good hire but he has a green off staff so I see the wr hire almost as important as the Oc! I like the system but we need players and more experience on staff!

good hire we needed experience on the off staff that is a given, we have a young Oline coach and first year RB coach and a spteams coach that works with TE's. We also need an experienced WR coach to add to this staff! I like the spread system but we need some big wideouts but i do like how they have addressed the OL position.

why is he taking so long to accept thios job? sounds to me like he may have another opportunity that will come after bowl games?? seems kinda strange, just curious of why any insight on that Teddy?

No disrespect to Mr. Dunbar, but if he is so good, how did we end up getting a shot at him? I have nothing against Coach Dunbar, I just don't want to get other teams' castoffs and throw good money after bad.

I might prefer to roll the dice on a young, lower division offensive-minded coach who has a good track record.

Just a thought.

Dunbar sat out this season but was still getting paid from Minnesota, that what i had heard? is that true Teddy?

So were re-learning the spread again?

We still have no proven QB or WR's to give us the warm & fuzzys.
The mark of a good coach is using the talent he has and getting positive results.
If the passing game struggles will he run Seth Smith first and keep the Defense honest with the pass?

I'm not trying to be negative Nancy here, but the passing game was just attrocious and needs a total 180.
Let's see what happens.

We neeed to get some WR in here fast if we are switching to a spread. What does this do for the QB spot? I know you said it will be wide open, and it should be, it also seems to favor Walls over Fleming, but what about others already here? There are 7 with the two coming in and we need to find someone who fits the slot.

Thanks for the link, I think the question and it was already asked on here is why wouldn't he take the job? What else does he have in line? I'm not to happy with the article, because if Moosh was on anyone's radar this might get them to make their move on him.

He is on UNLVs radar from what i hear but as a position coach! and he is a current Head Coach so like they always say "He does have a job" I know Moosh and CDW have a long history so they may have is much to do with it as anything? Time will tell!

I think if Dunbar wanted the job that bad he would have already accepted. I think he is still looking at options. The last thing we need is another 1 year OC. The first thing we need is to get some playmaking recievers in here and fast.

Looks like Dunbar and NMSU came to an agreement, so now lets get Moosh as Wr coach and we got us a great staff! Congrats to NMSU on the Hire.

doesn anyone remember? rosenbach was supposed to run some sort of spread as well!! it didnt work out so i assume they ditched it. i hope this one works out!!

Dunbar is our new OC!
He's got a tough task in front of him, no QB's, no WR's and no TE's!

You can't run the spread w/o a passing game.

I'm just saying

I think CDW is a smart man and I believe he will be a great coach at NMSU. I am pretty sure that he knows what a spread offense needs. I think we can all relax a bit.

Congrats to Coach Dunbar. Best wishes for a successful career at NMSU.

Hmmm, I don't know about having a spread offense. That will put a lot of pressure on the defense because the system will keep the defense on the field longer. Most teams that run the spread have terrible defenses.

Also it will take a couple of seasons to get the system working right. Just ask the coaches of Michigan and New Mexico about that.

I agree with Anon 7:53. The spread is just a formation to run an offense out of. It doesn't really define the type of offense (run or pass). In fact, Coach Dunbar has been quoted as saying he focuses on keeping the offense balanced. I think we can all just relax a little and just see what happens. I do agree that we need to get a few more guys at the WR position, and another RB to help with the load on Seth Smith.

THIS IS A GREAT HIRE!!!

Welcome coach Dunbar......could be our best recruit this off-season, and I think we are having our best recruiting class since early in the T.S. era.

How about we all start a new trend here in 2010 and be positive on these freaking blogs. Until everything is "in order" in your lives, stop complaining and acting like you know everything about everything.
Go Aggies!

I hope we can have the success and turnaround that Idaho had this season. They have been just as bad as the Aggies for a very long time. Go Aggies!

Teddy, can we get a new post here?

Maybe a wrap up of who has committed to the Aggies already, and if possible a short list of who they are going after still? Do you ahve a way to get that info?

Please lay off the comments we need better coaches at WR, RB,... etc at NMSU. Coach Walker is doing his best working in the confines of a limited budget (remember this is not the SEC, Big 12, etc. where they pay position coaches $150k + and Co-ord $500k +. There is no ? to anyone who has followed Aggie football that Walker had put together a great staff so let's let the Man work his plan and understand that it takes time to build the right foundation. I for one would rather go with younger coaches who have higher drive & passion than the retreads who are scouting out Las Cruces for their retirement house. I have been to multiple parcatices and seen the teaching/coaching/passion of the younger & the older guys on walker's staff he has a nice mix going.
