Mystery man

McKinley Boston is a savvy man. He shielded a candidate and the person has yet to be identified as of 12:33 a.m. mountain time Wednesday morning.

This signifies something significant though. Boston hasn’t been enamored with any of the candidates to this point and is looking elsewhere for a spark. It seems as if he thought the second round of interviews would allow him to zero in on a coach who separated himself from the pack…It hasn’t happened. The ordinary Rob Evans is like a piece of bread that has been left out overnight. Rod Terry, Gib Arnold and Marvin Menzies all bring different attributes to the table, but all come with question marks and no guarantees.

Who is the mystery man? Good question. Is Boston desperate? I don’t know if that’s the right word but he certainly is uncertain at this point. The next 24-48 hours will determine everything. If he had to make a choice right now, he wouldn’t be able to. The list is intriguing, but in his heart of hearts, Boston knows that the future of the program hangs in the balance. With the right man on the bench, the team can take another step forward. The wrong choice could be disastrous.

I still think Boston should role the dice. Evans? Too boring for my blood. I still believe it comes down to Terry, Arnold and Menzies. But then again, why bring in another candidate if you were certain the right name was on the original short list? It should be an interesting 24 hours

Maybe this mystery person threw his name in hat at the last second and his track record was too good to everlook.

If that's the case, Dr. Boston is probably getting permision from his current school before they talk.

I think we will know who he is later today. You gotta let the cat out of the bag sometime, right?

Could it be Dick Hunsaker?

I'm hearing Hope Pope wants out of his commitment.

It's too bad because this program is bigger than Reggie Theus.

I hope he stays but, success isn't built on people that are not commited to each other.

I usually enjoy reading your blog. You got a little too personal on this one. I don't know Rob Evans but your comments are tacky and beneath you. Just say that he doesn't have what it takes for NMSU. I'm also guessing that you've never managed a business. Often you can be in the middle of interviewing top candidates for a job and then a new one throws their name in the mix. Not a big deal or a red flag. Have a little faith in Boston. He is tops in his field. Think I will switch to a new sports blog. Not enjoying this one.

I think Herb Pope will be here. No one has spoke with him directly and it's purely speculation at this point. He was present at Reggie Theus' press conference last week and McKinley Boston said that Pope is going nowhere right now. When we talked to him last week he clearly wasn't happy but he also said that he remained committed to the program. I think that when it’s all said and done they’ll make a hire that works for him and that he will stick around. It would be a blow if Pope decided to not come to Cruces.

Confirmation on Menzies?

There has been no confirmation to this point. Everyone I spoke with the last hour had no knowledge of him being brought in as new coach. Everyone was genuinly surprised by the news. And no one saw the telecast. It's obviously huge news. It's a shock. I would not go by the assumption that this is true. There needs to be clarity on the matter. I think he is being considered but I also think Boston has his doubts. And I don't think the process of hiring a new coach is over. Is Boston leaining towards him at this point? Maybe. But he hasn't made up his mind. There is still more to unfold

Whomever it turns out to be we can be assured that the sun-SNooze, as usual, will be the LAST on the story. Marvin Menzies has already been tabbed as the coach by two other media sources yet your rag refuses to even acknowledge that. So how much do you get paid by the SID at NMSU to cover crap up? My first impressions were correct about you, you are a hack..go back to Sleepy Ville and cover the UFO's.

Herb Pope will be here because nobody else wants him. We kept talking about how great it was to get a blue chipper here, but now we know why.

Len, you are truly a sad man with a vendetta toward the NMSU SID, most in the athletic department, Coach Mumme, more recently Coach Theus (what a whining rant after he left!), and always toward the Sun News. Is there anything in your life that you are happy about? Many are tired of hearing the same neurotic reactions from you on Aggie sports web sites, and now on this blog. Geoff Grammer is gone (in fact he's in your town I believe). We are lucky to have Ted F. on board ... he's doing a good job.

There are some posts that just burn me up. I think some people think there is ALWAYS something back door going on. Some times there is, but some times there just is NOTHING there.

Thank you Teddy for the work you are doing I really appreciate all of your hard work.

(When I lived in Cruces 6 years ago, this is just my opinion that, nobody covered Aggie athletics and that was even in the middle of the season)

Don't listen to Len. He's just a naysayer that doesn't trust the media. I think you guys are doing excellent work.

Len, calling somebody a hack because they didn't report a story that turned out to be false. Very childish, in addition to being flat out wrong. I'd like to see somebody observe you're day at the office, and see how proficent you are.

well, amateurs, i am 15 years old and
i found the mystery mans name my first night looking for it. i found a
plastic bottle by the horseshoe street, in a dried up fountain. it had a note inside that said "the "h" building that holds the mystery persons name is visible from the place where the horse lost its shoe."obviously, it was talking about hershel zohn theatre. so the mystery persons name is hershel zohn.
