Position-by-position breakdown: quarterbacks

Leading up to the season, we will look at the Aggie football team position-by-position on a day-to-day basis.

We start today with the quarterbacks....

Quarterbacks

This is one unit on the team that supplies intrigue and upside.

Sophomore Andrew Manley is expected to start the 2011 under center after starting four games last year. He completed 63 of 121 pass attempts for 604 yards, with one touchdown and six interceptions.

Statistics aside, Manley is a big body — listed at 6-foot-3, 223 pounds — with a live arm, making him a good prospect.

Far from a running quarterback, Manley needs to continue to work on his pocket mobility — namely his footwork to avoid the inevitable pass rush — and leadership skills.

Senior Matt Christian is a steady player and gritty leader who knows how to win.

Either way, the Aggies could do worse at the most important position on the field.

Christian knows how to win? Im sure hes a great guy but winning isnt something on his recent resume. Manley was a winner in h.s., showed us what he can do last season and I believe will show us he's a winner this year.

Heard that the 3rd string QB is also pretty good.

Any thoughts about him?

We need Buck Pierce to start. Does he have any eligibility left?

Vato

Third string QB is Travaughn Colwell.

I like what I see — mobile and a good arm. But wait a year on him.

Well "Anonymous" you obviously dont know anything about Matt Christian. He won a CIF title in HS, won at the JUCO level, and was solid last year before injuries took him down. Christian is much more poised and mature and gives the Aggies the best chance to win now.

Let's see, 6' 3" & 223 lbs listed for BOTH Christian & Manly on NMSU athletic website 2011 roster, misprint or both big bodies? The myth of Manly is confusing. 1 TD, 6 INT with a pick-six! Christian, 8 TD & 2 INT, behind a make shift line & playing hurt the whole year. He bailed Walker out after Manly got shell-shocked in his Fresno start when everyone had jumped on board the Manly bandwagon. Like David said, Christian won San Diego CIF in largest school division- a region with 4 Heisman winners & the likes of Junior Seau & John Lynch. His JUCO team was 6th in the nation, he was bowl game & team MVP. Hawaii? We're lucky Christian's here to pick up pieces when Manly implodes...or get's crushed!
