Aggie coach DeWayne Walker said that the team will move running back Robert Clay to safety.
Clay has had a good camp running the football for the Aggies, although the team is deep at that position. Walker said that he thought Clay could be ready for action when the team squares off against Idaho on Sept. 5, the opener for both teams.
“He's a great athlete and a smart kid,” Walker said. “We think he can pick things up quickly (at safety).”
NMSU is set at safety with Stephon Hatchett, Alphonso Powell and Junior Fasavalu. Walker said that he thought Clay could move into the top-4 in the rotation quickly and could be an immediate contributor.

Seems to me that Coach Walker is injecting some speed into the DBs. It is pleasant to see a coach that values the defensive side of the field for a change!!!! Don't care how we win, as long as we win!!!
Yes, it is good to see attention being paid to the depth of the secondary. The defense will probably be on the field a lot this year. It is interesting that Zant, who had played quite a bit in last year's D is not keeping pace with the new D.
We don't want to deplete the Offense however and there is some position movements the other way. Teddy, I heard that Anthony Smith is moving from LB to Full Back. Can you confirm?
I'll see what I can do Chile Duck.
On a side note, Walker did bring up Zant in our conversation. Nothing major, but he did acknowledge his presence and that he could still see some time this year.
How about David Quiroga?
He's in the picture too, although as a backup.

According the NMSU Sports Information Director Tyler Dunkell, Smith has been moved to fullback.
