How much should Pope play?

At this point in the season, what do you think Pope's role should be? It's obvious from playing 23 minutes in his first game on Saturday that he will be a key player for the Aggies down the stretch.

Here are a couple of comments from Coach Menzies from Tuesday's press conference regarding Pope.

"I think he is a tough matchup and I do see his minutes going in a positive direction. Every game is going to be coached with a little bit of feel, but we will have a style of play where we can go a little deeper into the bench. I don't know but I could see how Herb's minutes could go up and I could see how Hawk or Fred or anyone of those guys who are playing 30-plus minutes could drop a few minutes and be a little more efficient. In a perfect world, that is what I hope for."

It looks like Wendell McKines could sacrifice some minutes, which I think is a good role for him right now as he works on the rest of his game.

I hope you guys are going to the the clearinghouse debacle go by the way side. I know a lot of fans would like some answers to why it took them so long to clear the young man to play.

You don't suppose the fact that the regional representative for the NCAA lives in Albuquerque and is likely a Lobo fan had anything to do with the delays in granting elgibility to Young and Pope---do you????

Back to the original question---why do the additional minutes for Pope have to come from Hawkins, Pete, McKines??? What about minutes from Passos or Iti? Pope, McKines, Hawkins and Pete can all shoot, handle the ball, and rebound better than either of the big guys. I have to admit that Iti and Passos are starting to play a little bit better, but it is about time. Passos and Iti have have height---the other guys have talent!!! McKines is a super rebounder and scorer---and in just his first year.

Menzies I am sure will do what is best for the team. They have alot of young talent and next year will be their (the freshman)time. I hope all the players accept what playing time they get a remember this is a team game.

The NCAA is notorious for this.

After watching him play on Saturday, I also think that he is very rusty. He should be eased in. I watched him closely as I hope Menzies did on film. He missed defensive assignments, and seemed winded as the game wore on. Practice, and game time will popefully wear the rust away. On another note, I'm not sure I would have put the ball in Cole's hands at the end of the game...GO AGGIES!

I want to say WAY TO GO! to all the Aggie fans on Saturday night-what a clever substitution of words(and appropriate,IMHO) Maybe you could try other names too-a certain Aggie AD and FB coach come to mind-BIG weekend ahead-payback time-Rock the PanAM!! GO AGGIES!!

I hope to see Herb Pope start tomorrow night? Also, Gibson, and Young did to shoot the ball better, and Hawkins needs to have a big game. He needs to shoot the ball more than 5 times.

I think this whole blog and comments are exactly the issue with the Aggie's performance last Saturday night against Louisana Tech. In many minds, it was sub-par with how they have been playing lately. But I think alot of reason was that now they are trying to re-work some chemistry with the addition of Pope (and even the return of Passos). The challenge to the team now is to get that chemistry settled quick now that the meat of the conference schedule is here. I think LA Tech was a good game to bring Pope on board so that the whole team can get used to his play, how minutes played are affected all over and helping him get rid of his rust.

This is the week when we just have to play better, use our deep bench, out run and flat out, pound people!!

We are in 2nd place.
Do the above and we control our destiny the rest of the way!
