Aggie baseball

Who's fired up about the Aggie baseball series this weekend against San Jose State? I know I am.

This is a huge four-game set. SJSU and NMSU are currently tied for second place in the WAC, and not far behind Nevada for the top spot. The Aggies are playing meaningful baseball in early May. It's a big deal.

NMSU is first in the conference in runs scored with 563. The next closest team is Louisiana Tech with 400. NMSU will need to pound some runs out on its homefield this weekend.

As for the Spartans, they're the top pitching team with a 4.35 ERA. That is over a run less than NMSU (5.57). The Aggies, who rank No. 2 in the league in earned run average, are closer to the norm than the Spartans in that category. San Jose State is also a strong fielding team — the Spartans have committed 16 less errors than NMSU on the year.

In other words, it's going to be a matchup of contrasting styles: An elite offensive club in NMSU versus a strong pitching/defensive team in SJSU. I always take good pitching and solid defense over a powerful offense. Than again, the Aggie baseball team has surprised all season long. I'm looking forward to the series.

It’s about time you had a post on the baseball team. This team has been an awesome offensive power house. The Aggies are currently first in the nation in runs, RBIs, on base percentage, second (to the stinking Lobos) in hits and second in home runs. Expect them to be back on top in home runs after this weekend. In 2003 I took my family to Tempe for the regionals to see the Ags play and that was a lot of fun. This year’s strength of schedule has kept their RPI down really low so they’ll need to win the series with San Jose State and La Tech and then do well in the Tournament in Hawaii to go the regionals. Of course the safest way would be for them to win the WAC tournament in Hawaii and they’ll have the automatic bid. It would be great to see an Aggie Lobo match up in Arizona or even with San Diego State to see how this offense would do against Stephen Strasburg’s pitching.

So, Teddy, how did you like that Aggie performance against SJSU? I for one was greatly disappointed. It looks like the touted Aggie pitching can only be effective against teams like Chicago State. 10-10 in the WAC is nothing to be proud about. The other down side is that the Aggie hitting got out hit pretty much all weekend. I would be interested in your take on what happened. They need to be careful this weekend, if they get swept by La Tech, they could miss the WAC playoffs entirely depending on what the tie breakers are for baseball.

The Aggies do not belong in any post season tournament. They gave up more than 50 runs in three games.

It was an ugly, 1-3 weekend!
NMSU has a ways to go in being a consistent elite WAC team.
