I want to address this Hal Mumme coaching situation.
Numerous media outlets have reported a contract buyout. OK, great, fine. There has been false report after false report regarding his immediate future with the program for the last four weeks. The other day was that he was going to be fired on Thursday. Well, it's Thursday and he's still here so that was an apparent air ball.
I'm not saying there isn't a buyout in place. There very well could be. I just got off the phone with Mumme's lawyer and he said that he has had no deal with the university. Is he telling the truth? Maybe, maybe not, but he's a better source than some anonymous face who is shooting from the hip.
The bottom line and the only thing I am close to 100 percent certain about is that Mumme will not return next year. There has been too much chatter, too many rumblings, too many unhappy fans for him to come back and coach the team. This is taking a toll on the athletics department as well, believe me. He will coach against La. Tech and after that, he may coach the last game, he may not. The one thing that appears almost certain is that he will not be back next season.

I've seen many NMSU coaches come and go in my time. Never have I seen a coach get so much grief.
Mike Knoll got some grief but, nothing like now!
Jim Hess got some grief but, had a lot of supporters because he's a good guy.
Tony Samuel was very popular when he was let go.
Both Hess and Samuel were good guys and did a lot with the community and student body.
Mumme is arrogant and does nothing for the students or Las Cruces.
If you want fans to show up to the games. Be nice to people, be active in the community, and be constantly competitive.
Having a winning record against your rivals also helps.
Who ever said, "good guys finish last" never met Reggie Theus or Lou Henson.
Reggie Theus and Lou Henson are two good ol boys that had the community eating out of there hands!!
With this said, I agree w/ Teddy. Mumme won't see December in Crimson & White.
The hell with that yellow bellied Mumme, get out there and support the team this weekend!!

This so called anonymous source with no face is an Albuquerque news reporter from the CBS station who is standing by his report. Whether or not it is true only time will tell. A comment from King Mac himself would be nice. As long as he isn’t back next year, but as long as he is still coaching Saturday I am not going to attend.
*Lawyers lie for a living. He has clearly heard from the university, but is just misleading us for his clients sake. Why would he confirm that a buyout is in place?
Why not call MAC? Is he not accepting calls on this matter? I am sure you are not the only reporter wanting to know some details.
*MAC, DO YOUR JOB. LET THE PUBLIC KNOW WHATS GOING ON. EXPLAIN WHY YOU BELIEVE THAT IS BETTER THE PROGRAM KEEPS HIM THROUGH THE SEASON. YOU OWE THE BOOSTERS, SEASON TICKET HOLDERS,FANS,STUDENTS,FACULTY,ALUMNI AN EXPLANATION ON WHY YOU ALLOW ALL THIS NONSENSE TO GO ON.
Mac keeps denying the reports coming from the sources from El Paso and Albuquerque talking about Mummes buyout. Seems like Mac is pretty good friends with Mumme and knows now the hire was a bad one, but is trying somehow to drag this out as long as possible...maybe to save face, who knows. Mumme should have been gone after the BSU game when he basically said in so many words that the Aggies couldn't beat BSU and basically had the team play to shorten the game with a running scheme that the Aggies don't even have. The longer that Boston drags this out the more fans he is going to end up disenfranchising. I think it might also be time to look at Bostons employment and evaluate that. Unfortunately since the University doesn't have a permanent Preisendent right now...Boston has pretty much assumed a role as dictator of NMSU.
Teddy,
No offense but look at your source...a damn lawyer!
This is a disgracefull combination; a lawyer and Mumme. The two are a notch slightly above pedophiles!
I hear a lot of people are not going to the game because Mumme will be on the sidelines.
If we want a decent size crowd to save attendance, Boston needs to giddy up and roll some heads!!
I'm not sure why he's dragging his feet but, he's only hurting this weeks attendance!
I for one will not be there, but only because of a prior arrangement I had. But for the sake of the players, esp. the seniors, I hope people show up.
Maybe have a homemade sign of some sort to display your frustrations. Or just by talking about it with the person in the seat/row next to you.
I half heartedly said in an old post that we needed the Rocky Long era in Las Cruces. Now that he has stepped down at UNM maybe that could be a possibility. As an Aggie Alum, I respect what he did for the loobs and think that is the type of leader we need, whether or not he gets the job.
Why would we want to get rid of Boston. Besides the Mumme hire, what has he done wrong? He hired a great coach in Reggie Theus, then hired a good replacement (so far) for him when he left. He's got the women's Bball program stabilized and heading in the right direction, he's kept Volleyball on track and made sure Mike Jordan is happy here, and not to mention the facility upgrades. All that Boston has really lacked is getting our baseball program up again and he struck out witht he Mumme hire. I think he's doing a fine job IMO.
And please fans, do not punish our great seniors this Saturday for Mumme's failure. We have one of the better QBs and some of the best WRs NMSU has ever seen. If you don't want to go to support Mumme, go to cheer on Holbrook, Williams, Harris, Richardson and others one last time. They've put their butt on the line week after week for Mumme and Las Cruces for the past four years. They deserve our support win or lose. It's just one more game, at least let the players know we appreciate their effors even if we aren't satisfied with the results.
And for $2 a ticket, no excuses.
Yes, yes. Boston is a dictator. He runs his department with early promises to coaches and fans, which never get kept, and drives coaches away from him due to his lack of communication skills. Tell me what has gotten better since he has been here? I have been around here for a long time and have seen it all. Don't blame it all on Brian Faison for the problems we now have in moral in the department, in the community and the dept he has created. He told the coaches they would increase budgets to be competitive with WAC schools and increase their pay and make things better for coaches, fans and players. None of these have happened. He has driven people away. Maybe people need to start pointing the finger at Boston a little more through all this.
When we do hire the new football coach, it does need to be someone with a "larger than life" personality so he can creat a buzz around the program, much like Henson, Theus, Jordan, Menzies and Spence did and/or do with their programs.
How about getting someone in marketing/promotions who knows what the heck he or she is doing too?
Dr. Boston had a brain fart when he hired Mumme.
But in his defense, he came into a tough situation of taking the AD job, trying to move his family to Las Cruces and hiring a FB coach in less than ONE month!!
Once he settled in and had a little bit more time, he hired Reggie Theus in March and has done a very good job since then.
Look at the Pan Am renovation, Aggie Memorial improvements, a world class track coach, WAC BB and VB tournaments, etc!
Yes, we still need more but, all of this has been under his watch.
If he would have had more time, he probably would have done a better job in hiring a real FB coach.
I said it before, he gets a mulligan and will redeem himself before 2009 rolls around! I guarantee!

anon. I supported those kids by my donation to the program every year, i don't have to waste my time watching losers when i could stay home and watch winners on TV. I would have considered going if mumme the idiot loser wasn't there, as long as he is around my money will be going to a Aggie volleyball and Mens & Womens B-BAll.
I think "Anon 6:57" is right on target. "Anon 8:35" says really interesting stuff, like he has first hand knowledge. But everyone knows there are too many of these "insider" knuckleheads on the internet. Boston made a bad choice with Mumme. But how many of you thought it was a good hire after Holdbrook's sophomore year? I did. While the D was ignored, we had an entertaining offense with hopes that the D could be improved to average. I admit, I drank the Air Raid kool aid after that season, and thought Boston was a genious for hiring Mumme and Theus. I was only half right.
As for the game Saturday, I sure wish people would show up regardless of Mumme being fired or not. Do it for the seniors, do it for the entire team, just do it! Get out there and support the Aggies!! I would, but I live 650 miles away.

SPEAKING CLOSELY TO A PLAYER NOT TO BE NAMED HAL HAS THRU OUT THE SEASON TOLD THE PLAYERS @ THE HALF AND PLENTY OF OTHER TIMES HE DOES NOT CARE WHAT IS HAPPENING HE IS STILL GETTING PAID, AND THE ONLY REASON HE IS HERE IS TO HELP CHASE GET TO THE NEXT LEVEL, WE REALLY JUST NEED TO FIND A WINNER PAY HIM HIGH DOLLAR 4 WHAT HE IS WORTH= WINS, RECRUITS AND FANS WILL SOON FOLLOW... CHECK OUT THE LIST OF POTEINTALS @ FIIRE HAL MUMME . COM, GREAT LIST PROBLEM IS BOSTON DOESNT REALIZE WHAT IT TAKE TO BUILD A WINNER RUN TO SET UP THE PASS=== TAKE THE THEUS APPROACH
Dr. Boston intended to fire Mumme on thursday. The word got out. He made the decision not to let the coach go as planned because it would appear the sources close to the matter feeding the abc station would have been right in their information. It was too easy to put this off. Dr. Boston saves some face, still eventually ridding himself of Mumme, the media appear off balance and finally we move on as hoped.
One thing nobody seems to bring up is why Joe Lee Dunn was giving two year contract? What assistant is given more than a one year deal. Did Boston think that Mumme would work out thus be his DC next year, or was it a back up plan to put Dunn in place if Mumme had to go? Dunn might be a good DC but it would be a bad idea to limit yourself to one person. It's also not a good idea to have the new coach stuck with someone that he had no choice in, that gives the new guy a built in excuse for failure(didn't have a choice in DC). Or is Boston going to buy out Dunns contract also. What a soap opera this is turning into.
