The wide receiver position

One area the New Mexico State Aggies need to improve in is at the wide receiver position.

Where has Marcus Allen gone? He got off to a hot start, but has cooled in recent weeks and didn’t make a catch last weekend at Idaho.

What got me in the Vandals’ game though was dropped balls. Darrius Preston has a lot of talent, but he continues struggle. He dropped a critical pass on second-and-10 at midfield that would have set up a third-and-short yardage situation.

One thing I’ve noticed about the Aggies is that when it’s third-and-long, the team is going to punt. Opposing defenses seem content to drop back in zone coverage and dare quarterback Matt Christian to find the soft spots. They also aren’t worried about the Aggies taking a lot of shots downfield — Christian doesn’t have a huge arm and teams don’t seem to think the Aggies can beat them deep.

That’s what made the Preston drop maddening — the Aggies needed to sustain a drive at that point and that would have helped. Instead, it was deflating. Darrius has eight grabs on the year for 83 yards and zero touchdowns. I know he’s better than that.

The team will utilize Taveon Rogers more this week and Todd Lee should get a look as well. Allen has the talent to break out, but I think teams are paying extra attention to him in the passing game.

But the Aggies don’t have a ton of options at the position. This offseason the team will bring in Daniel English during the offseason, a player from New Westiminster, British Columbia. Redshirt freshman Adam Shapiro is also expected to possibly contribute. Joseph Matthews will come in as a true freshman from Tucson, Ariz.

The Aggies believe they can build their offense with young players at running back and wide receiver. And they will have a chance to do so at WR.

Why not give Manley some minutes since his redshirt is no more?

Can't hurt...

Manley can throw it down the field!

Let Christian start but, give Manley plenty of minutes. SJSU is not a team that can make adjustments on the fly.

A hange in tempo will keep them on there toes.

2:00 start time for Homecoming?!! Bola de burros!!

Maybe a little in the way of misdirection would be nice as well. Some trick plays here and there.

If the Aggies are to get any more wins this season, why not go for broke?♠

Since Walker took over we have no offensive production and his so called strong point, the defense, is weak at best. This team would be beaten by the teams put forward by Jim Hess, Tony Samuel and Hal Mumme. Hess was successful at every stop but NMSU. Samuel currently has the #11 ranked I-AA team and Mumme turned around a terrible McMurray program in his first year and this year they are setting all kinds of offensive records and winning. Can it be that we have a tradition of losing that cannot be broken. I have respect for the people that still have hope for Walker and staff but I just don't think they have shown they have what it takes. Either pony-up the money and hire a front line coach or drop the program!!

Walker can do it, but only with his guys. This team isnt here yet. Once he has his players in his system for a few years things will be fine. You people need to relax. He was givin mud and rocks and is expected to build a empire. Wait till he gets his proper tools, and that empire will appear.

I agree that Manley has to play. Christian is not the passer we need. The season is basically lost and we need to give Manley the experience he needs for subsequent years. If we do not beat SJSU, no one will be at the final two games of the season unless there is something to interest them. That would be Manley taking over at QB. Brings in some fans and gets him the experience he needs. Besides I would like to see how he does in a full game and see if he settles in.

Walker is a first time head coach and it shows at NMSU. Had the powers that "be" hired a seasoned coach the progress would be faster. As for all the "Kool aide drinkers"...a good coach could take the players he has and get better results. It's not the players, it's the head coach! I don't think the Aggie players have "bought into the program" as he so often says.

What team that they have lost too could another coach have beaten???? NONE!! they have no o-line, no pass rush, undersized linebackers, and a overrated seconday. Pete Carrol couldnt coach this team to a win. Let Walker get his players in, and they will succed. No doubt....

Okay. Who know WHO can throw -- because the OC seems to like his QB's to be running backs. Seriously???

Christian is good, but he is always hurt. Was last year in San Diego too. Way to fragile for D1 football.

Rust and Manley have not been given a chance. I would like to see each of them really get to play, and be allowed to pass, so we can see what we got. No one can pass judgement, because the coaches won't let them play, even when they are on the field.

Move Rust to WR or Safety, he cant throw. Im sure the coach knows if the kid can throw or not. I think we should give manley a chance, but I also think christian is the best option. the kid is getting killed back there and is still not afraid to step up in the pocket. No o-line and no running game= no passing game. Not sure if Peyton Manning could throw the rock around with this o line and core of recievers.

Manley needs to play to gain experience for the future. Hopefully they'll let him play these last fees games to get his feet wet, and hopefully this off season it can translate to him taking over at QB full time as a sophmore. Hopefully with Daniel English's size, he can bring a new dimension to the passing game, depending on how well he does in spring camp and fall training. I personally can't wait to see if this talented Canadian can live up to expectations.
