Boise State game

I know it was the No. 3-ranked team in the country.

But the New Mexico State Aggies looked flat-out bad on Saturday night at home, losing to Boise State 59-0.

I thought the best thing the Aggies did all night was the first play of the game - a play action pass that saw them take a shot deep downfield to wide receiver Marcus Allen. Allen beat the BSU cornerback by a step, but quarterback Matt Christian overthrew him.

After that, it was downhill.

The Aggies next snap went over Christian's head and he threw the ball away, getting flagged for intentional grounding.

The team turned the ball over on the next three possessions and Boise State did exactly what everyone expected - rolled NMSU up and down the field.

Right now, the Aggies don't look like a Division I team. And it's going to get worse if Christian's out for an extended period of time with an injured shoulder he suffered on Saturday.

Backup QB Tanner Rust does not look ready to play at this level.

And it's going to be hard to get up for this weekend's game against New Mexico. Both of these teams are arguably the worst college football has to offer. Outside of the San Jose State game at home later in the year, it will be the Aggies best chance for a win.

If Christian starts, they should win. If he doesn't, I don't think they will.

If the Aggies are serious about getting a win this year, they have to show up this Saturday and play like there's no tomorrow. It might be their best shot to get one. I'm not being sarcastic or trying to be funny. It's just the truth.

This is a must win game! It's for state pride!

Win, and the fans will stick around till homecoming.
Lose, and the fans will mail it in.

Win or lose, me and my family will be at all the games.
However, the bandwagoners will fall off quickly.

If Rust isn't ready, what about that kid from Hawaii?

SACRAMENTO STATE QB-

Fleming threw two interceptions in the first half but none in the second. He completed 20 of 36 passes for 348 yards and five touchdowns and ran for another score, tying the school single-game touchdown record.

Fleming scored 21 pts in 6 minutes in the 3rd qtr.

Anon 3:55,
You said "win or lose, me and my family [sic] will be at all the games. However, the bandwagoners will fall off quickly."
My question: WHAT BANDWAGONERS!!?? If I'm wrong correct me, but isn't the term "bandwagoners" almost ALWAYS associated with a winning team? How can the NMSU football team actually HAVE bandwagoners? For what bandwagon?

But he wasn't playing pitch and catch against the No. 3 team in the country either...when Sac State plays Boise, then we can compare apples to apples.

Dewayne Walker used to coach cornerbacks with the Washington Redskins. For that, and that alone, I will always have his back. HAIL.

Teddy,

You talk in your post like this loss to Boise hurt bad. NMSU has never competed wit BSU in football so why is there a tone of surprise or disappointment in your writing? What I mean to say is that in other years a loss to Boise did not generate this type of reaction from you, what is different about this team? I know their bad but the Mumme teams never competed with Boise and got beat by the same score....is this team worse than them based on how they play?

In 2007, the Aggies competed against Boise State at home on a Sunday night ESPN affair. The final score was 40-28 BSU, but there was optimism that the Aggies might not be far off.

In 2008, NMSU lost 58-0 in a miserable ESPN game.

In 2009, Mumme's final year, the team flat-out quit and got straight-up blown out at home 49-0.

Last year was 42-7 in the last week of the season.

This year was 59-0, and the team couldn't compete even if it wanted to.

I'm not really making a point here, just playing revisionist history.

As for Walker coaching the DBs in Washington, he dealt with Pierson Prioleau and the late, great Sean Taylor. We appreciate all outside fans to chime in when appropriate. It sets the bar high....

So whats the word on Matt Christian? Go or no go?

If he can't go. I think it's time for Coach Dunbar to show his creativity.
Put Kenny Turner behind center and run the "wildcat" or the triple option baby!!

The defense needs to flat out show up this week. They have Missing In Action all season. This is the week to show up!

Teddy I know this is your blog and you are probably a busy guy but it would be nice to see a little bit more insider information here.

It doesnt take much to notice this team is not doing well. The more important story is what do they need to do to turn it around?

What do we need to watch out for in the upcoming weeks? I know none of the players have set themselves apart but who is on the verge (or is the cupboard bare)?

I know it is not your job to hype anyone up or feed us full of false hope, but being an Aggie Football fan is not an easy thing. We need a few rays of light, or at least notice that is are none on the horizon.

regarding the performance of the defense............as I look at the starters, the only significant difference between this year and last are the linebackers. Are they really to blame? Can the introduction of 3 new starting linebackers really be the difference in yards (423.6) and points (31.6) allowed per game last year and this year (541.8yds and 46pts)? What gives? The time of possession is essentially a wash between this year and last. The schedule this year through five games includes SDSU, UTEP, Kansas, Boise State, and UNM. Last year, Instead of Boise State and Kansas, we played Prairie View A&M and Idaho in addition to the other three mentioned. I think this year's schedule upfront is much more challenging than last year. I will continue to look on the bright side. I think the schedule gets easier and that the freshmen currently missing assignments resulting in more points on big plays will continue to improve. That and the fact that the offense is putting up more yards (but not more points yet) than last year are things to be optimistic about. Go Aggies!

OK didn't want to rub it in, but thought you might enjoy this...

Fleming played against STANFORD,(PAC10)after arriving at Sac St. just 5 days prior...He drove the team down to score! Sac St. lost by a score of 17-52! I think that constitutes a more competitive team, wouldn't you say?

Good luck this weekend!

I think we should give more freshman playing time. What do we have to lose, get the experience. The older guys arent getting it done.

What's the deal with this Bozo posting on Jef Flemming?

So he had a couple of scoring drivs against Stanford's 2nd & 3rd teamers. Big deal.

He will always be known as the guy who quit when he lost the starting job at NMSU.
Once a quitter....

Okay.. I am confused.

On Saturday -- against the number #3 team - Christian threw 5 of 14 in almost 2 quarters. Rust threw 3 of 8. Both almost equal percentages. They both rushed for an average of 2.5.

They both seem about equal, except the fact the Christian always looks to be hurt or fragile. He was hurt the last two years. Rust looks much more durable that Christian. He took hits and got right up.

My real question -- why with what seems to be strong arms -- are we not throwing? Throwing 22 times in game. What's the deal?

Don't get me wrong, I'm really happy Fleming is doing well. He gave it a shot here and has an opportunity to play more minutes where he's at. Heck, I'd be happy if he won the Heisman if it was possible.

My point earlier is that playing against Boise is a tough deal and hard to compare to whoever Sac State was playing that day. And yes, moving the ball against Stanford is great, but again, apples-to-apples...a drive at the end of the game vs. 3 quarters against a mad top-5 team that is playing with a purpose.

I do hope Fleming continues to play well and win. I'm pulling for him...except when he plays against the Aggies.

The only thing Jeff Fleming proved is that he is a heck of a DII QB.

As far as a DI QB.
Well, last years #'s say it all.

He's where he deserves to be. Enjoy the Pilgrims Pride Turkey bowl on ESPN OCHO, QUITTER!

Interesting all the Flemming post's. Hey I wish him all the luck in the world. He seem's to be flourishing at Sac State. I still wish he was here. I always thought he had a big upside. Given our current situation I for one will say we miss him. He did win the game at UNM for us last year. For that I'll always support him.
Go Aggies Go Jeff
